Community Coalition for Haiti - January 2014
In January 2014, I traveled to Jacmel, Haiti, to lead a team of 6 Shenandoah University doctorate students in a medical mission's trip. There we partnered with the Community Coalition for Haiti to provide health screenings and basic interventions at a rural mobile clinic. As a dietitian, I worked alongside a nurse practitioner and Haitian physician to screen for malnutrition and provide nutritional education and intervention within the means of the resources available. I spoke with children at a local schoolhouse through the help of a translator and discussed the role of adequate nutrition in the growing process, how to rely on local resources to improve their intake of whole foods and the importance of each food group.
Joni & Friends Family Retreats - July 2012 & 2013
For one week each summer, I volunteered as a Short Term Missionary through Joni and Friends Ministries and hosted a "Fun with Food" cooking club for individuals with disabilities.
